One million signatures within sight!

News Splash n° 15 : In the past few weeks our campaign has seen the number of signatures rocket up from 300.000 to 900.000! Most signatures have come from Germany and Austria. Thanks to all the people in those countries for promoting our European Citizens’ Initiative! In all other countries we have collected more signatures but these have generally been small  increases . Clearly we have to do much more promotion. So we ask YOU again to promote our ECI among your friends, colleagues, at other places where people meet, and through social media. Our campaign went all over Facebook and Twitter in Germany and we think this helps a lot.

Some people still experience problems while signing. We are the first ECI to have such a level of success and the European Commission software has difficulty handling the load. We have been working around the clock to solve all problems and hopefully these  are behind us. Please be patient when signing online and inform your friends and colleagues that signing up to a European Citizen’s Initiative  is not as easy as signing an ordinary petition. You have to take your time.

Our campaign has become very topical because the European Commissioner for the Internal Market has proposed legislation that local or regional governments have to open their water services for competition. This would open the door for profit-driven Multinational Corporations to take over public water services all over Europe. Competition in water services is a shame because water is always a local monopoly. Governments would be forced to hand over their monopoly to private and profit-driven companies. History shows that this leads to increasing prices and a lower quality of services. Citizens will be the ones paying for this and it does not help the poor, on the contrary.

We have to stop this ‘insane’ proposal and we have to continue with even more determination to collect over one million signatures, preferably even many more than  this. One million (valid!) signatures is the minimum to make sure that our proposals are on the European political agenda. If we can deliver many more signatures this will even be more impressive to the European Commission and will help to increase the pressure to turn our proposals  into European legislation.

Water and sanitation are a human right! Water is a public good, not a commodity!

Please continue to promote our ECI!  Many millions of people continue to be deprived of clean, safe and affordable water and sanitation, even in Europe. The European Commission can do something about it, but WE have to put it on their agenda! Over one million signatures from EU-citizens are needed. Signature forms are available for each country on our website www.right2water.eu/signatures-forms and they have our logo and a return address on it.
